Food & Mood

The Food that you eat also depends on your Mood. Don't you believe?? You got to.

Now you all must be wondering how ‘Food’ and ‘Mood’ is related to each other??? You may not have thought about it but that’s how it works.

The food you would like to eat depends on your mood and emotions.  Say for example, you had been going through a very bad day at your work place and you would like to cheer up. Ultimately you end up grabing your favourite drink or desert to chill out and pep up your mood.

So both Food and Mood goes hand in hand. Ladies!! if you would have noticed during your menstruation cycle, you may tend to be choosy about the food you eat. Some may like to have spicy foods, or few may prefer to have more of veggies and fruits during this time. It is said that the serotonin levels during mensuration are low and that is the root cause for many women going stressed out and unusually irritated at times. Let’s discuss this in detail,

What does serotonin do?

Serotonin is a hormone which is present in the pineal glands, digestive tract, blood platelets and the brain. The job of serotonin is to transmitt nerve signals between nerve cells, thereby narrowing down the blood vessels.

Any change in the serotonin levels in the brain, alters the mood of the individual.

How to raise your Serotonin level?

Certain foods helps in raising the serotonin levels. Foods that are rich in

  • Vitamin – B : Eggs, meat, corn, yeast, green leafs etc.
  • Calcium: Milk and milk products, tofu, almonds, fish, green leafs, sesame seeds etc.
  • Magnesium: Salmon, shrimp, sesame seeds, green leafs, brown rice etc.
  • Tryptophan: Soy and soy products, almonds, peanuts, turkey etc.
  • Essential fatty acids: viz. Omega 3’s, Omega 6’s and also GLA (Gamma Linolenic acid)

So try to include such foods in your diet, which will help raise your serotonin levels to have a good mood and a healthy feeling throughout the day.

Weight ManagementA weight management program that works long term is not something that you go on and off when you feel you need to lose a few pounds. The program that you can live with must be flexible enough to work with you rather than against you.

Diets that restrict food teach us that changing our exercise or eating habits are short term projects rather than a longer term situation such as an improved lifestyle. People are bombarded with words like ‘lose 30 pounds in 30 days’ and most people tend to believe them. They go on and off diets, stop and start exercise programs, and their weight fluctuates up and down along with their self esteem.

Many people do not understand there is a much better and healthier alternative to short term diets. There simply is no need to jump on and off the diet roller coaster when body weight shoots up or whenever some new miracle diet plan comes onto the market. We are now very sure that diets do not work and over 95% of people who go on one will regain the weight plus some extra as well.

In order to break free from the ineffective diet mentality you need to view your exercise program and eating plan as part of a permanent lifestyle change rather than a short term fix. It is important to adjust short term thinking and replace it with longer term realistic goals such as getting healthy or improving strength and fitness if your goal is weight loss. It is only when you become a healthier person you will achieve your weight loss goals.

Nowadays it is about making sure you have a healthy metabolism (your body’s engine) as this is the key to reducing your excess body fat. The new way this is achieved is with the understanding that hormones and chemicals are involved in the key processes of metabolism, and that the exercise we do and the food we eat plays a huge part in whether we store body fat or burn it for energy.

Before Weight LossThis is the major reason why diets don’t work as they force the body to work against us rather than with us. As soon as calories are reduced below a certain level the body puts the brakes on fat loss as it senses a famine and quickly goes into ’starvation mode’ in a effort to stop itself from starving.
This state only makes it harder long term to lose body fat. You are in effect teaching your body how to better hold on to the fat. The new way of fat loss is about stoking your metabolic engine to burn the excess fat off rather than attempting to starve it off.

This way also involves a proper exercise program that contains strength training exercise which is the only exercise that will tone and firm muscle tissue. Have your program set up by fitness professional so that you get it right and get the results you want. Wasting time on ineffective exercises will only slow your progress and leave you frustrated and disappointed.

Try this new way for yourself and step by step you will see that this way may be slow but it is far better than having your body weight going up and down.

You will finally be able to see your weight going down permanently and can be relieved you will not ever have to put yourself through the rigors of restrictive food dieting again.

BMI CalculatorMedical studies have shown that ‘weight management’ through the reduction of excess body fat plays a fundamental role in fighting disease and maintaining superior health. The research also linked the stress of excess body fat to major physical conditions such as, cancer, stroke, hypertension, and heart disease.

Without a doubt, excess body fat is a ‘health hazard’ and should be avoided. One of the best ways to find out if you are normal, overweight, or obese, is by determining your BMI, or Body Mass Index. To calculate your Body Mass Index, take your weight (in kilograms), and divide it by your height (in meters) squared. A score of:

25.0 – 30.0 means you are overweight,
30.0 – 40.0 points to obesity,
40 and above classifies you as morbidly obese.

Since BMI describes the body weight relative to height, it is strongly associates with the total body fat content in adults – children’s calculations are more complicated, because they also have to take gender and age into account.

Body shape and body fat distribution is important in determining a number of health risks. How your body is shaped, and where the fat bulges are hiding, is indeed relevant to your health. For example, the fat cells around the abdomen will release their fat more eagerly into the bloodstream than other fat cells. This means that ‘pot-belly’ victims are more likely at risk to get narrowing arteries, diabetes and cancer. Fat mainly deposited in the lower half of the body, such as the buttocks, thighs and hips does not appear to have the same risk factor. Also, weight deposits in the waist region are generally more characteristic for men than women.

So, Regular exercise for at least 30 min per day and a healthy diet will keep you away from diseases. “Watch you BMI at least every 3 months to avoid apologetic later over obesity”.

by divya on June 4, 2009

Toothe AcheSurprisingly there are many foods that can be used as natural toothache remedies. You probably have at least one — probably more — of these in your house right now, so you really can get instant relief. Of course, the best of all natural remedies’ is to take good care of your teeth.

So, remember to rinse your mouth regularly, especially after meals. Regularly brush and floss. And otherwise follow good oral hygiene. However, even the most diligent of us can fall victim to the occasional toothache pain. Try these natural remedies before you reach for an over-the-counter medication and while you are waiting to make a trip to the dentist.

Natural Tootheache Remedy5 Common Foods That Can Stop the Pain and act as “Natural Toothache Remedies”

  1. Salt – You don’t get any more “common” than salt. A good salt water mouthwash helps get rid of tooth infection and can help to cure a toothache. A thorough rinsing of the mouth with salt water is important at all times and should be a regular part of your oral health routine.
  2. Hot Pepper Powder – Adding a pinch of hot pepper powder to the salt is also a good idea — if you can stand the heat. Pepper powder can have a nice numbing effect when you rub it on your gums.
  3. Garlic – Placing a clove of garlic with a pinch of salt on the affected tooth helps relieves the pain. Garlic has antibacterial properties that kill the germs in the mouth.
  4. Onions – Exactly the same use and effect as garlic.
