What is an ORAL ULCER?

An Oral ulcer is nothing but an open sore present in the inner layer of the mouth. This might be due to many reasons. It usually appears to be white in colour and equally painful too. Whenever there is a break in the mucous membrane it forms as an ulcer.

Oral ulcers or mouth ulcer can happen in and around the mouth say inner side of the lower or upper lips, inner walls of your cheeks, tongueback side of your tongue and at the bottom of your gums. This might also leave a bad odour in your mouth.

Causes of Oral Ulcer

There are various reasons and causes for these oral or mouth ulcers. They usually last for a week. For severe mouth ulcer cases, please consult a doctor and get medicated immediately. The major cause for a mild ulcer to occur is due to the following factors

  • Your body temperature (excessive body heat)
  • Iron deficiency or Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Accidental Biting of lips or tongue
  • Animal or insect Bites
  • Cigarette smoking quitters
  • Use of tobacco or tobacco chewing
  • Mental Stress and Anxiety
  • Accidental injuries while brushing your teeth
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Hyper active immune system

Treating Oral Ulcer

Treating an Oral ulcer is not a difficult task though.If you know the exact cause of the inflammation you are ready to be treated. And also depends on the degree and level of ulcer that has affected.

A mild ulcer can be treated at home. However, a severe mouth ulcer has to be consulted for immediate medication in order to stop spreading all over the mouth.

  • If you are suffering from mild ulcer due to excessive body heat, then you can cool down your body by taking coconut milk or butter milk.
  • Washing the ulcer with cold water might relieve the pain temporarily
  • Pain killers can be used to reduce the pain
  • To stop spreading further, use anti-bacterial mouth wash
  • Use of coconut oil at an initial stage can prevent it going worst
  • Do not eat hot and spicy foods during this period as it might get worse

Preventing Oral Ulcer

Preventing is always the best way to keep you away from such painful boils. Follow the steps to prevent oral ulcers

  • Maintenance of a good oral hygiene can avoid 90% chances of oral ulcer
  • Avoiding accidental injuries while brushing
  • Intake of Vitamin B12 in the proper proportion
  • Try to include more of fruits and veggies in your daily diet
  • A nutritious food can prevent mouth ulcers

Oral Disease – How dangerous can it be???

  • Dental cavities : Tooth Decay is the major cause for Cavities. A tooth decay affects the outer layer of the teeth which is known as the enamel and the dentin layer of the teeth. When we intake foods that are rich in carbohydrates, some particles of the food are left behind in the teeth. The bacteria’s present in our teeth digest them thereby leaving acids behind. A plaque is formed due to the bacteria acid, saliva etc. thereby destructing the enamel of the teeth and producing holes in our teeth which are termed as Cavities.

  • Gum disease: A gum disease, also known as Periodontal Diseases and Gingivitis. They are infact two extreme stages of a Gum disease. A periodontal disease is a bacterial inflection surrounding the teeth which can affect one or many teeth. The term Periodontal refers to “around the teeth”. This affect the gums and the bones surrounding the teeth. Gingivitis on the other hand is a milder form of periodontal Disease. It may not cause much disturbance though, but if left unattended might lead to loss of tooth.
